Il principale obiettivo della Joint Action “Strategies for Health Interventions to Eliminate Infection related Cancer” (SHIELD) è ridurre la morbosità e la mortalità premature causate da malattie trasmissibili, in particolare dai tumori associati a infezioni e da quelli prevenibili tramite vaccinazione. La combinazione di diverse strategie in un programma di prevenzione completo ed efficace richiede il coordinamento tra molteplici e diversi stakeholder, tra cui la società civile, le autorità e le istituzioni di sanità pubblica, le strutture di supporto sociale, i sistemi sanitari e la comunità scientifica. Un aspetto centrale sarà l’identificazione e il superamento delle possibili barriere, sia strutturali sia individuali, che ostacolano l’efficacia dei programmi, nonché l’individuazione, lo sviluppo, il trasferimento e l’implementazione di pratiche promettenti. SHIELD mira a definire un programma efficace a livello europeo, combinando competenze complementari già attive in questo ambito. Il progetto risponde alle priorità del bando analizzando come garantire l’implementazione su larga scala di tutte le misure preventive rilevanti nei diversi Paesi e individuando le barriere che ne ostacolano l’attuazione, sia a livello strutturale sia individuale, con particolare attenzione al ruolo dello stigma e della discriminazione, soprattutto in relazione all’HIV ma anche ad altre infezioni. Attraverso l’applicazione di modelli analitici, SHIELD intende inoltre determinare la combinazione ottimale di misure preventive da adottare nei diversi Paesi e contesti. L’approccio parte dalla considerazione integrata di tutte le strategie di prevenzione – primaria, secondaria e terziaria – piuttosto che dal solo focus sulla copertura vaccinale, al fine di massimizzare l’impatto delle opzioni disponibili nella riduzione dei tumori causati da infezioni.
