SHIELD JA - Strategies for Health Interventions to Eliminate Infection related Cancer

The main objective of the Joint Action "Strategies for Health Interventions to Eliminate Infection related Cancer" (SHIELD) is to reduce premature morbidity and mortality caused by communicable diseases, in particular cancers associated with infections and those preventable by vaccination. Combining different strategies into a comprehensive and effective prevention programme requires coordination between multiple and diverse stakeholders, including civil society, public health authorities and institutions, social support structures, health systems and the scientific community. A central aspect will be the identification and overcoming of possible barriers, both structural and individual, that hinder the effectiveness of programmes, as well as the identification, development, transfer and implementation of promising practices. SHIELD aims to define an effective programme at European level, combining complementary expertise already active in this area. The project responds to the priorities of the call by analysing how to ensure the large-scale implementation of all relevant preventive measures in different countries and identifying the barriers that hinder their implementation, both structurally and individually, with particular attention to the role of stigma and discrimination, especially in relation to HIV but also to other infections. Through the application of analytical models, SHIELD also aims to determine the optimal combination of preventive measures to be taken in different countries and contexts. The approach starts from the integrated consideration of all prevention strategies – primary, secondary and tertiary – rather than from the sole focus on vaccination coverage, in order to maximize the impact of the available options in the reduction of cancers caused by infections.
