Department

The Department of Statistical Sciences was established in December 2006 and comprises the former members of the Institute of Statistics and the Institute of Population and Territory Studies.

Statistics analyses data to better understand complex phenomena, predict future events and make decisions in conditions of uncertainty.

Its role is now central in numerous contexts, from social sciences to medicine, from industry to finance, and public policies and has given rise to disciplines for analysing data and phenomena in specific contexts such as Economic Statistics, Demography and Social Statistics.

In recent years, the vast amount of information resulting from the development of digital technologies has led to the emergence of Data Science, which unites Statistics, Computer Science, and Artificial Intelligence across many disciplines.
