The Department of Statistical Sciences was established in December 2006 and welcomes the professors previously related to the Institutes of Statistics and Population and Territory Studies.
Statistics analyzes data to better understand even complex phenomena, predict future events and make decisions in conditions of uncertainty.
Its role is now central in numerous contexts, from social sciences to medicine, from industry to finance, to public policies and has given rise to disciplines to analyze data and phenomena in specific contexts such as Economic Statistics, Demography, Social Statistics.
In recent years, the great mass of information following the development of digital technologies has led to the emergence of Data Science, which unites Statistics, Computer Science, and Artificial Intelligence across many disciplines.
