Abstract: In the framework of Europe's Beating Cancer Plan, a new European Cancer Screening Scheme has been proposed, with the aim of ensuring high-performance screening programmes in all Member States. The overall objective of EUCanScreen is to ensure the sustainable implementation of high-quality screening programmes for breast, cervical and colorectal cancer, as well as to facilitate the initiation of recently recommended programmes for lung, prostate and stomach cancers.

EUCanScreen will contribute significantly to reducing the burden of cancer and promoting greater health equity across the EU.

Seven specific objectives have been defined:

Ensure the full implementation of evidence-based, cost-effective screening programs with adequate quality control systems for breast, cervical and colorectal cancers.

Prepare for the introduction of evidence-based, cost-effective, and quality-controlled screening programs for lung, prostate, and stomach cancers.

Ensure proper governance and sustainability of programs.

Improve the collection, timeliness and comparability of data related to screening programmes, together with monitoring systems.

Ensuring equal access to screening programmes for all eligible European citizens, helping to reduce cancer inequalities.

To strengthen capacities and competences in the field of cancer screening.

To promote collaboration and coherence with other projects funded under European programmes.

The EUCanScreen work plan builds on the results of previous and ongoing major European initiatives on the topic of screening and is divided into eleven closely interlinked work packages.

The consortium brings together already established, high-performance screening programmes together with those in need of significant improvements. In total, the consortium includes 29 partner countries: 25 EU Member States, as well as Ukraine, Moldova, Norway and Iceland. The project will be coordinated by the University of Latvia and will involve an additional 28 competent authorities, 61 affiliated partners and 7 associated partners.
