Abstract: Cancer, an articulated and complex set of diseases, is destined to grow significantly: by 2050 new cases will increase by 77%. In the European Union, cases are expected to reach 3.7 million by 2045. In general, the number of people living with cancer is increasing faster than the scientific advances designed to treat it. This means that, in the coming years, the priority of health will be to ensure effective and sustainable treatments for an ever-increasing population.

Europe's Beating Cancer Plan (EBCP), presented on 3 February 2021, anticipated this scenario, becoming the first EU initiative dedicated to a single disease at a supranational level. The Plan brought together Member States and European institutions to collaborate in a sector – health – that traditionally falls under national competence. Since then, the EBCP has delivered 32 key actions and 10 strategic initiatives covering the entire cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care pathway.

The European Joint Action JANE (2022–2024) paved the way for the creation of Networks of Expertise (NoEs) in oncology, with two main objectives:
(a) prepare all that is needed to launch 7 new networks in the following areas:

  • complex tumors with a poor prognosis
  • palliative care
  • survivorship (quality of life and care after treatment)
  • personalized primary prevention
  • Omics technologies
  • High-tech medical infrastructure and resources
  • adolescents and young adults with cancer

(b) critically analyze the existing European models of cooperation in oncology, present and future, to optimize the functioning of the new Competence Networks, enhancing the experiences already gained and developing shared solutions within the European oncology community.
