Doctorates
The Doctoral School in Linguistic and Literary Sciences, currently in its 4th cycle and with two cycles planned for 2025/2026 and 2026/2027, represents the highest level of university education in the Department. It offers research courses in languages, linguistics, foreign literatures, language teaching and communication sciences, promoting a plurilingual, multicultural and multidisciplinary academic environment.
The School provides two paths: one historical-theoretical-applied and one philological-literary. Languages studied include Arabic, Chinese, French, English, Russian, Spanish, German, Italian, and European and Mediterranean civilizations. Advanced competence in at least one language in addition to Italian is required to enter. A place dedicated to the topic of internationalisation of higher education is also available.
The School's international approach is reflected in the numerous mobility opportunities for doctoral students, which include study and research stays at foreign universities, libraries and centres, as well as the possibility of co-tutorship and double degrees with foreign universities. The training, based on freedom of research, also allows personalized individual paths agreed with tutors and teachers.
The aim is to train researchers capable of carrying out rigorous and innovative studies, in a multilingual and multicultural perspective. During the three years, PhD students attend courses and seminars, develop research projects under the guidance of tutors and present a final dissertation evaluated by external experts.
Career opportunities include academic research (post-docs, researchers, university professors), teaching, literary and specialist translation, publishing, creation of language corpora, international cooperation, cultural industry, language promotion and consultancy for companies and institutions.
The School promotes collaborations with industries and has activated scholarships co-financed in various cycles, in particular through the PNRR and agreements with companies such as Sky Italia, Publitalia '80 and Auditel, to support projects related to cultural heritage, linguistic sciences and innovation issues.
Through post-doctoral monitoring, it is shown that graduates find employment mainly in universities, schools or companies, confirming the high level of preparation provided by the School.
