Serie ottocentesche ad personam
Here one will find documentation about family members who lived in the 19th and 20th centuries. The ad personam series were adopted during the 19th century by the archivists in charge of the management and reorganization of the records of the Visconti family, who gradually added to the already large family archive. The files of this series are in the names of individual members of the family, but a rich documentation regarding these same figures is also included in the 19th-century general archive organized by subject. In fact, as with other partitions in the archive, in the ad personam series you can see obvious gaps in the documents, due to travel, relocations and war damage. The same causes have resulted in non-homogeneous criteria for the classification and description of dossiers in the more recent inventories.
The collection includes documents on:
Visconti di Modrone duca Raimondo (1835 - 1882) - 6 folders
Visconti di Modrone duca Guido (1838 - 1902) - c. 25 folders
Visconti di Modrone duchessa Ida (1870 - 1915) - 13 folders
Visconti di Modrone duca Uberto (1871 - 1923) - 53 folders
Visconti di Modrone conte Giovanni (1873 - 1931) - l08 folders
Visconti di Modrone duca Marcello (1898 - 1964) - 40 folders
Persone diverse – c. 12 folders
Without making any claim to completeness, we can point out as noteworthy the files of Duke Guido, classified as "Particular objects - Teatro alla Scala". Duke Guido was in fact President of the Società anonima per l'esercizio del Teatro alla Scala in 1898, the year the company was founded, with Guido Gatti Casazza as general director and Arturo Toscanini as artistic director. When the Duke died in 1902, his son and heir Uberto was elected President of the Società. The papers relating to the theatre continue in 8 of the 49 folders registered under Uberto Visconti di Modrone.
The particularly large number of sub-series relative to Count Giovanni and Duke Marcello, for example, invites interesting future research on the careers, entrepreneurial activities and public offices held by the two men, i.e. the documentation of the Velvis factory (under Marcello Visconti), or that of the military career and membership in the Istituto Nastro Azzurro by virtue of his having been decorated for military valor (under Count Giovanni).
Even though they occupy only 5 folders, the papers of Duke Raimondo portray an intense life divided between the Piedmont Cavalry Regiment, the positions of mayor of Cazzago and Besate and city councilor of Milan, a passion for theatre as evidenced by his association with the Accademia dei Filodrammatici and the Istituto Drammatico di Declamazione, and his position on the Board of Directors of the Banca costruzioni di Milano.
The inventory on some series of this partition of the archive has benefited from the financial contribution of the Regione Lombardia.
L'inventariazione di alcune serie di questa partizione dell'archivio ha beneficiato del contributo finanziario della Regione Lombardia.
