Sir Ivor Roberts began his career as a British diplomat at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 1968, the year of its foundation. He was Minister in the British Embassy in Madrid from 1989 to 1993. He was appointed Chargé d’Affaires and Consul-General in Belgrade in 1994, and after recognition of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia by the United Kingdom, he became Ambassador. From 1999 to 2003 he was British Ambassador to Ireland. In 2000 he was made a Knight of the Order of St Michael and St George. From 2003 to 2006 he served as British Ambassador to Italy. From 2006 to 2017 he was the President of Trinity College, Oxford.
